Wanted: Program Director, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Branch

UPDATE: The position is now closed.

We’re recruiting for an accomplished scientist with interest and experience in computational biology to join the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB) Branch of the Division of Biophysics, Biomedical Technology, and Computational Biosciences (BBCB). The successful applicant will be responsible for scientific and administrative management of a portfolio of research and training grants.

The BCB Branch of BBCB supports bioinformatics and computational approaches that join biology with the computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, biostatistics, and physics as well as general approaches that have the potential for broad applicability and use by investigators with support from across NIH and other agencies. The Branch collaborates with other parts of NIH on the Big Data to Knowledge and Smart and Connected Health initiatives, and with the National Science Foundation to support a program in mathematical biology.

Candidates should have a doctoral degree and experience in developing and/or applying computational approaches to biomedical problems. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, computational and mathematical biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biomedical data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Applicants with a broad background in more than one of these areas are preferred. A record of scientific accomplishment evidenced by publications and presentations at national meetings is expected. Experience as an independent research group leader is valued but not essential. Additional administrative, teaching, and science communication activities will also be considered. Familiarity with NIH extramural funding as an applicant, reviewer, or NIH scientific administrator is a plus, and outstanding written and oral communication skills are essential.

This position is included in the Global Recruitment: Recruiting for all of NIH. There will be two GS-12/13/14 Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) vacancy announcements: one for federal employees (candidates with current or former federal employment status) and one for the public (candidates without such status). The vacancy announcements open on September 21 and close on September 30.
