It Takes Courage: Re-Emphasizing Our Institutional and Societal Commitment to Diversity, Respect, and Inclusion

Recent events have highlighted the unfortunate, discriminatory, and, at times, violent or criminal actions taken against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. These events, including attacks on women and the elderly, constitute a threat to the health and well-being of not only the AAPI community, but also to the principles of diversity, inclusivity, respect, and civility. Data recently released [PDF] by California State University, San Bernardino, indicate a 149% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes reported to law enforcement between 2019 and 2020, including staggering increases in some of the most demographically diverse cities in the country. These events, and the perspectives or attitudes that underlie them, damage the social fabric and mutual bonds that hold us together. Elements of hate and discrimination anywhere act as a barrier to equity and respect everywhere.

We’re recruiting for an accomplished scientist with expertise in strategies and methodologies to design and operate productive research, outreach networks, and development programs to join our Division for Research Capacity Building (DRCB). The successful applicant will be responsible for scientific and administrative management of a diverse research portfolio of faculty development, research training, and research infrastructure improvement grants.  

The Networks and Development Programs Branch of DRCB leads the Division’s efforts in developing and implementing innovative ideas to enhance research and technology transfer infrastructure and the workforce pipeline. The Branch also shares in managing the grant portfolios supported by all funding initiatives of the Division.

Our Northeast IDeA State Technology Transfer Accelerator Hub, which supports biomedical entrepreneurship, is hosting a workshop for research core directors, postdoctoral fellows, and others supported by NIGMS grants who are interested in learning more about the business side of academic research facility management:

Funding Opportunities: Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP)

We’re pleased to announce our participation in Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP), a $500 million NIH-wide initiative to reduce morbidity and mortality disparities for vulnerable and underserved populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The initiative will fund a national coordination center and a group of interlinked projects across the United States aimed at improving COVID-19 testing and understanding COVID-19 health disparities.

Funding Opportunity: Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH)

We’re pleased to announce that the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) funding opportunity announcement (FOA) (PAR-20-125) has been issued.

NARCH fosters opportunities for biomedical research and career enrichment to meet health needs prioritized by American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) tribes and tribally based organizations. The NARCH initiative also supports research capacity building, including the development of research infrastructure to enhance the biomedical research capabilities of AI/AN communities. NARCH grants are awarded directly to federally recognized tribes or tribal organizations that may partner with research-intensive institutions.

Funding Opportunity: Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Phase 3
