We’re pleased to announce our Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) (T32) funding opportunity announcement (FOA) has been reissued (PAR-21-189). This FOA continues our efforts toward changes in integrated medical and graduate research training to keep pace with the rapidly evolving research environment that’s increasingly complex, interdisciplinary, quantitative, and collaborative. This program provides support to eligible domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-informed approaches to integrated dual-degree training leading to the award of both clinical degrees (e.g., M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S., and Pharm.D.), and research doctorate degrees (Ph.D.).
In addition, the new FOA:
- Emphasizes creative and transformational approaches to clinician scientist training, including curricular reform, that preserve the best elements of current programs while enhancing the focus on developing trainee skills
- Promotes a culture where the highest standards of practice ensure the safety of all individuals in the research environment
- Replaces the required completion of Training Data Table 6A with a more focused set of application and admissions data that must be provided as part of the Other Attachments section (refer to our suggested format for these data)
- First application due date: May 25, 2021
Earliest start date: July 2022
Please note that applications (including those from previously established programs) must be submitted as new (-01), unless the program was funded by the previous MSTP FOA (PAR-19-036). While the training tables for new applications only allow for 5 years of recent outcomes, the application may describe up to 15 years of outcomes in the Program Plan.
As always, we welcome your feedback. You can email your questions and comments or post them below.
To confirm, my tables should only go back 5 years, but we can describe in our text up to 15 years?
From above: “While the training tables for new applications only allow for 5 years of recent outcomes, the application may describe up to 15 years of outcomes in the Program Plan.”
Thank you, ~Liz
