The funding announcements for our NIGMS institutional predoctoral National Research Service Award training grants (T32) ask grantees to report and disseminate training and career outcomes in a publicly available format. Training outcomes are relevant to both students and to the broader community to monitor the success of our evidence-informed training and mentoring activities. A website is an easy way to disseminate training and career outcomes.
I anticipate that some of our T32 program directors may welcome examples of websites that publish career placement of trainees. While we aren’t suggesting any specific approach, here are some examples:
- University of California, San Francisco, Tetrad Graduate Program Career Outcomes
- Stony Brook University Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology Graduate Program Alumni
- Tufts University School of Medicine M.S. in Biomedical Sciences Program Career Pathways and Outcomes
- Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional M.D.-Ph.D. Program Alumni and Outcomes
I encourage to review these websites as you develop better ways to share career outcomes of your trainees. In addition to contacting me with your questions or feedback about providing program outcomes, you can also post a comment below.
UNC-Pharmacology lists all of our alumni (T32 appointees as well as those from our departmental program) on our website with their picture, the title of their thesis, PhD advisor, and their current position. The list goes back to 2000 (24 years!) and is updated yearly. Over 95% of our graduates remain in STEM-related careers.
