Wanted: NIGMS Program Directors

We’re recruiting scientists for positions in our Division for Research Capacity Building (DRCB) and Division of Genetics and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (GMCDB). The successful applicants will be responsible for scientific and administrative management of a portfolio of research grants and/or research training and career development awards, and will stimulate, plan, advise, direct, and evaluate program activities related to their field of expertise.

The DRCB position involves overseeing grants supporting research and providing resources for research infrastructure enhancement and capacity building in the basic, translational, and clinical biomedical sciences. The chosen candidate will manage Institutional Development Award and Native American Research Centers for Health programs, and may contribute to other programmatic activities as opportunities and needs emerge. Individuals with a strong background in clinical and/or translational, behavioral, epidemiological, community engagement, health disparities, and public health research are strongly encouraged to apply. Shawn Drew Gaillard to Direct GMCDB

I’m pleased to announce the selection of Shawn Drew Gaillard, Ph.D., as the new director of our Division of Genetics and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (GMCDB). Shawn has been the acting director of the Division since February 2022. She will begin in this new role on January 15.

Shawn joined GMCDB as chief of the Developmental and Cellular Processes Branch in 2019, overseeing grants focused on organismal response to environmental stressors. Prior to this role, she was the research training officer at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and before that, she was a program director in our Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity and former Division of Genetics and Developmental Biology. Her experience also includes serving as a science education fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and directing what is now the NIH Academy on Health Disparities.

We’re seeking a highly qualified branch chief for our Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity (TWD). Applicants should have interest and experience in the areas managed by the Predoctoral Basic Biomedical and Medical Science Training Programs Branch. Position responsibilities include: programmatic and administrative planning, management, and evaluation; optimization of Branch procedures; and oversight of the grant portfolio activities of the Branch program directors. The branch chief will also manage a grant portfolio and will work closely with the other TWD branch chiefs and the TWD division director. Outstanding written and oral communication skills and a commitment to enhancing the diversity of the biomedical research workforce are essential. Candidates should have an interest in supervising and mentoring a team of program directors and serving as a leader within the Branch, the Division, and NIGMS.

GMCDB supports basic research in three broad areas, including the molecular basis of cellular function, the genetic and biochemical pathways utilized in development and physiological processes, and the mechanism and regulation of fundamental molecular processes. The Cell Biology, Developmental and Cellular Processes, and Genetic Mechanisms branches manage research programs in these areas. GMCDB-supported research lays the foundation for studies on human health and disease.
