As in previous years, we’re offering administrative supplements to NIGMS-funded R01, R35, and R37 awards for the purchase of single equipment systems (such as components of a working microscope).
The deadline for these supplement applications is March 30, 2020.
All provisions of NOT-GM-20-013 apply. Note that:
- These funds are intended for the purchase of single equipment systems with requested direct costs up to $250,000.
- The requested supplemental budget cannot exceed the total year direct cost amount of the parent award. Applications may not include requests for future year funds.
- As part of the budget justification, a statement regarding the expenditure of currently available unobligated grant funds should be included.
- Two, and only two, NIGMS grantees at the same institution with similar equipment needs are encouraged to submit separate requests with a combined budget of no more than $250,000 in direct costs. The requests should cross-reference each other, stating both grant numbers.
- Applications must be submitted to PA-18-591, Administrative Supplements to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements (Parent Admin Supp Clinical Trial Optional). Use the research application package labeled “FORMS-E-ADMIN-SUPP-RESEARCH.”
Eligible investigators are strongly encouraged to discuss potential requests with the program officer of their grant before submitting an application.
Hello,
We have a PI that is would like a 2-week extension to the 3/30 deadline for this supplement as his lab has waivers to continue urgent COVID-19-related experimental research, and that has taken extreme precedence. Will a late submission be honored if this is denoted in the cover letter?
Please see NIH’s policy on late application submissions due to the public health emergency. Be sure your PI follows that and explains their circumstances in the cover letter. For additional guidance, be sure to monitor the NIH webpage, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): Information for NIH Applicants and Recipients of NIH Funding.
Dorit,
We (as are many other people) now have our labs and research operations temporarily shut down. Do you think NIGMS will extend this deadline of March 30 given that the situation, which is certainly
unprecedented, is only getting worse.

Hello Dr. Zuk,
I wanted to confirm what the required documents were for the supplement application. I downloaded the FORMS-E-ADMIN-SUPP-RESEARCH forms and it is indicating that items like the project summary/abstract, narrative, specific aims, introduction for a revision, etc. are required. Just like a regular full new/renewal proposal. Are those documents required, or only those that are listed on NOT-GM-20-013?
